In this section we will be examining support systems that allow audio signals to be stored in digital form. Clearly in this case factors such as the sampling frequency and quantization bits that may degrade the system need to be taken into consideration before the signal is stored.

Any professional's aim, or in fact any lover of sound's aim is to get the highest possible sound quality out of the equipment one has. Usually in a professional context one can make use of sophisticated machines which could emphasize even the smallest detail with their sheer precision and quality.

The possibility to sample a signal and therefore to transform it into a finite togetherness of data made it possible for it to be manipulated through mathematical operations rather than electrical transformations.

To get a better idea of how the quantization process is brought about, we will now take a look at a diagram which highlights its main stages.

The dynamic of a digital device is calculated with a formula out of the number of quantization intervals.

Let's now take a step back to the sampled voltage we mentioned earlier. What we have is an electric signal which varies continuously; let's suppose we collect a voltage-sample which, in order for it to be converted into digital, must necessarily be approximated into an integer number seeing that we can't use infinite amounts of binary digits to represent it.
