The aim, during the recording phase, is to record the signals picked up from the sound sources as faithfully as possible, in other words, with as little alterations as possible. For this reason no effects are usually used in this phase, the mixdown being the stage in which sound manipulation actually takes place.

Generally they are built with a very sensitive microphone inside and they are calibrated so as to capt sound pressure with a response that mimes that of a human ear.
