When the compression ratio of a compressor is brought to a value higher than 10:1, it begins to behave like a limiter:

Limiting curve

With reference to the previous diagram, the signal that has gone beyond the threshold is brought back down to the threshold level. This means that the signal never goes beyond this limit. This device is sometimes employed to protect equipment from unexpected peaks which could ruin them. Nevertheless this solution adds heavy distortions since the limiting action behaves like a saturation.
