This kind of loudspeaker makes the most of the proprieties of certain materials to vibrate when an electric current flows through them. The vibration frequency is proportional to the frequency of the applied current, and this is how the sound transported by the electric signal is reproduced. These loudspeakers are very efficient and have an extremely high impedance (ideal therefore for creating loudspeaker matrixes composed of lots of elements which, when connected in parallel give an impedance which is similar to that of common electrodynamic loudspeakers). Moreover, they are able to reproduce very high frequencies, and therefore are often used, especially as tweeters.
