In this case a thin ribbon made of conducting material is hung within a magnetic field, and therefore when it is made to vibrate by a sound wave, it generates a current flow and the same phenomenon we saw in electrodynamic microphones takes place. The following diagram illustrates this situation:

The following is a short list of the main characteristics of ribbon microphones:

  • The diaphragm is very thin which means excellent responses to high frequencies even if this makes it very delicate and ill suited to high sound-pressures.

  • It is used for recording delicate vocals and acoustic guitars.
