Input impedances and output impedances are typical of every circuit that has an input stage and an output stage. What we're interested in here is to illustrate the fact that the values of these impedances can be established during the designing stage, when the circuit's parameters are chosen depending on its purposes.

The following diagram illustrates a general circuit, highlighting its input and output impedances:

As we can see the input impedance is the one that is measured externally on the input clamps, whereas the output impedance is measured at the output clamps.
