NR systems are defined as being static when none of the parameters relating to compression vary. On the contrary, when the reduction algorithm constantly adapts itself to the input signal, we call it dynamic. Another classification labels as single-ended NR systems that are applied at just one point in the audio chain (i.e, noise gates, muting, filters) and as double-ended systems entailing a double-ended action. The latter usually consists in the two coding-decoding phases (Dolby A, SR, B etc.)
