The dynamic of a digital device is calculated using the number of quantization intervals. This is the formula:

Dynamic Range = 20 log (Quantization intervals/1)

The following is a table illustrating the Dynamic Range values that correspond to the different number of quantization intervals used in day to day practice.

Table 18.8. Example of quantization

Number of necessary bitsQuantization intervalsDynamic range
825648.2 dB
12409672.3 dB
141638484.3 dB
166553696.33 dB
201048576120 dB
2416777216144.5 dB

Amongst the values in the table, we can spot the dynamic value for Audio CDs (16 per sample), namely, 96.33 dB.
