This chapter is dedicated to a subject which is often a little bit muddled, because there are many definitions associated to it and one always runs the risk of mistaking something for something else. However, the concept of decibels is at the heart of sound theory and systematically presents itself every time we measure a quantity connected to the latter. The reason for its importance is that the human ear perceives sound pressure logarithmically rather than linearly and thus it is more convenient to express the quantity levels connected to sound amplitude with an logarithmic measuring unit: decibels.
