This section deals with a subject which often gets a little bit muddled, because there are many definitions involved that can be misleading. However, the concept of decibels is at the heart of sound theory and comes up practically every time we deal with a quantity regarding sound. The reason why it is so important is because the human ear perceives sound pressure logarithmically rather than linearly and therefore it is more convenient to express the quantity levels related to sound amplitude with a logarithmic measuring unit: the decibel.
