One definition we could give is that we perceive sound when a variation of air pressure in relation to a constant value occurs. When this variation is repeated cyclically within a time interval, which we shall better define shortly, sound is perceived. Sound requires a medium in order to travel, air is one of these media. Its particles, as we shall see, transfer the vibrations generated by the sound source to each other, thus diffusing the sound into space. This means that any medium, be it solid, liquid or gaseous, can transport sound, varying the speed at which it travels depending on its density. In our case we'll consider air as our reference medium.
