When a magnetic ribbon is magnetized we must consider the movement of the ribbon itself. When an area of the ribbon is magnetized by the recording head, immediately it moves away from it. So, the magnetizing force applied to that area of the ribbon decreases as the head slowly moves away. By decreasing the applied magnetic field, the hysteresis cycle contracts until it finally collapses at point 0.

This means that if the ribbon doesn't scroll quickly, the hysteresis effect deletes magnetization immediately as soon as it has been applied. Thus a high rolling speed of the ribbon minimizes this unwanted phenomenon.
